Avraham Eilat: The Fear of What Is Suddenly Too Late

Ein Hod Arti Gallery & Janco-Dada Museum
Curators: Galia Bar Or, Zeela Kotler Hadari
January 18 – 16 April 2025

This comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the artist Avraham Eilat was presented simultaneously at the Ein Hod Artists' Gallery and the Janco-Dada Museum. The exhibition was accompanied by a new, extensive artist book edited by Dr. Galia Bar Or. It offered the public a look into the significant chapters that shaped the life and multidisciplinary career of Eilat, one of Israel’s leading artists.

Avraham Eilat was born in 1939 in Kfar Saba. He was a member of Kibbutz Shamir between 1960 and 1978, and currently resides in Ein Hod and Tel Aviv. He studied art at the High School of Painting in Tel Aviv (1962–1965), specialized in etching at Atelier 17 in Paris (1966–1967), and studied at the St. Martin's School of Art in London (1970–1971).

Eilat is a multidisciplinary artist: a painter, draftsman, printmaker, photographer, creator of experimental films and sound works, sculptor, and maker of hybrid objects, among other media. He is endowed with extraordinary independence of thought, self-irony, and a distinct artistic voice that challenges boundaries and conventional perceptions of life. In his work, he engages with the organic, cultural, and socio-political body, never shying away from expressing extreme experiences of war and illness. In retrospect, the cycle of works he began creating in 1967, upon his return from the Six-Day War, was ahead of its time in how it expressed that experience without making specific reference to the war itself. His uniqueness lies in the fact that the horrors of war, illness, or even the brink of death never moderated or diverted him from his path; instead, they stimulated and charged his work with deeper layers of the aesthetics of trauma, without compromise or self-pity.

His critical worldview took shape during his youth out of an intuitive resistance to whatever society dictated as the sole truth. As an artist, he has resolutely adhered to his path, maintaining a sober observation of the reality of his life while remaining acutely aware of the blindness built into societal mechanisms of power.

The exhibition's title, "The Fear of What Is Suddenly Too Late," is taken from a series of works he created between 2000 and 2004—a chilling name that reflects on the time this text is written, against the backdrop of October 7th and an ongoing war. This series of works depicts labyrinths of tunnels swarming with masses of people. Inside these tunnels, a dystopia of absolute control unfolds across countless generic human figures—oppressor and oppressed, jailer and jailed, torturer and tortured. It is a bunker that functions as a policed grave, entirely blocked to the freedom of body and spirit.

In this exhibition, Eilat presents a new configuration of his installation "Mastaba," which was first shown in 2008 at the National Gallery in Prague. Also on display are photograms created by Eilat since 2000, paying homage to Man Ray and his quote: "I would rather photograph an idea than an object, and a dream rather than an idea." The exhibition further features large-scale, inspiring oil-on-canvas paintings, a selection of his innovative films from the early 1970s and the 2000s, and a scroll dedicated to drawings of fertility figurines (1995), alongside many other works by the artist.
